Review: A Monster Calls

A Monster Calls A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A children's book? Yes, and no. Each night, 13 year old Connor comes face to face with a monster, but it's not the monster he's expecting; not the monster that haunts his nightmares. This monster isn't scary, unless forcing you face the horrible truth is really the only thing you fear.

Life isn't easy, it isn't neat and tidy. Kids don't understand illness, family breakups, loneliness. Ness' story is both emotional and haunting, and an all too realistic look at how life and its daily tragedies impact and influence children.
