Review: Another Brooklyn

Another Brooklyn Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Disclaimer-I LOVE Jacqueline Woodson's works, so I expected nothing less from "Another Brooklyn".

A chance meeting with an old friend brings back a flood of memories of her childhood in Brooklyn. The apartment that confined August and her brother as they waited for a mother who would never come. The streets that exposed her to worlds as foreign as the countries she would one day explore. Friends who shared secrets and supported each other through the the darkest moments. The dark staircases where men hid in wait, mothers who never came home, fathers who built walls, and boyfriends who demanded more than some could give.

August's Brooklyn, the many layers it held, are explored through poetic voice that lifts the fog of memory.
